observer

Observer is a chair that raises the eye level to 5.2 meters, shifting the boundary between heaven and earth, the horizon itself. Seated one can theoretically (in the case of a flat piece of earth) see up to eight kilometers - roughly 1.75 times further than at normal eye height. The user gains distance from the earth and its inhabitants, experiencing the world from a different perspective.

Observer combines two archetypes: a ladder and a chair. The ladder enables ascent, the chair invites observation and contemplation. This methodology remains open, allowing endless formal reinterpretations. Since the installation of the last Observer from a limited series of eight pieces, I have occasionally revisited the idea of developing new manifestations based on this principle. I am drawn to the notion that a modest, honest, lightweight construction can alter someone’s perspective. The idea of re-imagining these slender towers appearing in landscapes continues to bring both joy and anticipation.
