The idea arises from a desire to create a sustainable alternative to the often pre-made and imagination-poor playground equipment in public spaces. The Burgerbegroting 2022 of the District of Antwerp gives us the opportunity to realize a first prototype. We aspire to be more creative with white space. Hand in hand with a passion for aesthetic and high-quality play structures in public spaces. This time we opt to work in semi-public space, working areas such as the Stroomplein, where the test case will take place, are ideal for testing installations within a controlled urban context. Stroomplein is publicly accessible, but only at specific times, during organized events. By activating this urban sculpture we receive feedback from our target audience. The range of semi-public spaces is wide. In a dream world we see our installations temporarily integrated into parks, schools and streets. With the ultimate goal of gathering expertise to nest as a hybrid system in the permanent urban context.

The poetic-geometric formal language initiates play, without offering literal actions. We want to tap into the inexhaustible creativity of children, but also homo ludens in general, by offering minimal, subtle spatial works of art. As designers, we want to focus on tangibly translating playful activities into design terminology within this research. In this project, our design vocabulary mainly contains terms such as folding, mirroring, copying, turning, extending, coloring, ... Which we would like to relate to verbs such as balancing, rocking, sliding, climbing, turning, ... We believe in systematic simplicity, which therefore works in a multidisciplinary manner in different contexts. Simple actions at various locations open up places in the city. These actors also work as a catalyst and connection between parents of children who we involve in the play sculptures.
